UMP THREE MINUTE THESIS 2017 COMPETITION ENHANCES POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS IN PRESENTATION SKILLS
Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS) UMP has organized an event known as the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition which was held on 22nd March 2017 at Auditorium Library Gambang Campus, UMP. This event is an annual event of IPS which has been successfully implemented since 2014. This year, a total of 8 participants from the Technology category and 9 participants from the Engineering category had competed for the title.
There were six honourable judges who assessed the performance of the participants. They were from different fields of study and one of them is from the industry. The first judge is Professor Dr Md. Mustafizur Rahman, Dean of Research Engineering from the Research and Innovation Department. The second judge is Associate Professor Dr Gaanty Pragas A/L Maniam, director of the Central Laboratory of Universiti Malaysia Pahang who is an expert in the Technology field and Dr Chiam Kee Swan, a lecturer from the Centre for Modern Languages and Human Sciences as well as UMP coaches from previous national level competitions. An expert from the industry was represented by Encik Mohd Ghazali Bin Maarof who has been involved and active in the industry since 1991. Last but not least is Professor Dato’ Dr Hasnah Harun, the Dean and Professor Datin Dr. Mimi Sakinah Binti Abdul Munaim, Deputy Dean of Institute of Postgraduate Studies.
This year, there were 17 participants selected from 10 faculties to represent our university to the national level.
The competition began with the Technology category followed by the Engineering category. For the Technology category, the first place went to Geraldine Chan Sue Ching (PSM16002), second place went to Debashish Das (PCC15003) and third place is Basheer Mohammed Mohammed Alhaimi (PPT15006). For the Engineering category, Jessinta A/P Sandanasamy (PKB15002) won first place, second place is Ashwin Charles Benedict (PKC15018) and Olusegun Abayomi Olalere (PKC15013) was placed third. The champions took home a cash prize of RM500, a plaque and a certificate. For the firstrunner up and second runner up, they received a cash prize of RM300 and RM150 respectively, as well as a plaque and a certificate.
The winners for both categories was trained by our experienced coaches, Dr Chiam Kee Swan and Madam Normala Samsudin, where they will be evaluated again by IPS before representing UMP in 3MT competition at the national level was held in 18th May 2017 at Universiti Sains Malaysia. The winners at the national level will then participate in the Asia-Pacific Three Minute Thesis Competition which will be held in September 2017 in Australia.
